Like Rocks? Then Blue Mound is the place for you. Not far from the first trailhead, is a small cluster of rocks that test your abilities. A small scattering of rock gardens and rock bridges are strewn along the trail that will keep your scenes sharp. Unique to this trail are larger obstacles that can be ridden, or if you’re not up to it, you can avoid them by using the bypass provided. Each occurrence has a sign indicating the direction of each (See Pict E).

Other technical challenges are waiting in the wings as you move into Cherps Dip. Look out for the climbs in Dr. Evils Garden as well as Crux Climb. Each are very challenging when dry and can be extremely frustrating to ride when wet due to the slick rocks. Be careful. Beyond Five Corners, is Serpentines Climb. This trail can be technical at times with protruding roots and rocks as well as its long, gradual ascent. It’s quite the workout.

There are a few bail outs before entering the longest section of Blue Mounds, Holy Schist. DON’T bail out. You will miss one of the most technical, fun and fast moving segment of trails in the state. The first part is the fastest section. Some good speed can be reached on this trail-pieces at a time. You still have to deal with the ever occurring rock and root obstacles. There are the rock bridges of course and with that are a few steep climbs that are handled much more efficiently on a geared bike. The old SASS was not geared right for this terrain.

The trail finishes off with some great views of the forest but still hands out a demanding ride. This is a loop that ends at the hill above the pool and parking lot. This is a great trail and should be ridden when the terrain is dry. We recommend riding this no earlier than June unless you like the mud.
