Smokin Spoke

Smokin Spoke is located in Rhinelander and is one of many great trails in this area. The trail is very difficult to find because the “parking lot” is located off of a private driveway. Refer to photos and map links to help you find it. The “parking lot” is an area equipped to hold maybe ten cars and is a clear cut grassy area. No toilets on site so make sure you take care of any business at the local gas station before you get to the trail.

If having to drop a deuce at the Rhinelander BP station is a negative, than it’s the only negative this trail has. This is an approximate 8 mile, one way loop loaded with technical riding. You’ll find rock gardens, roots, dips, steep technical climbs and descents, a plank ramp over a fallen log and even a log bridge. It’s well maintained and has great flow. The trail isn’t marked well, but it’s only an issue at a few fire lane intersections. Ride equipped with your GPS or at least a map to guide you through.

If you’re a beginner, don’t try this one. We heard a story from one of the locals about a couple of guys who were looking for a technical trail…they ended up having to be picked up half way through. The shame!

The scenery is beautiful, especially as you work your way around the lake.

We rate our trails based on scenery, flow, technical and aerobic difficulty. That being said, this is the best trail we have ridden and gets our highest rating yet. If you only ride one trail this year, and you’re confident in your biking skills, ride Smokin Spoke.
