At first glance, Winter Park looks intimidating. The parking lot sits at the bottom of a ski hill which means the only way is up--true indeed. Two trail heads give no options but climbs. Somehow, the climbing has no affect on your lungs, legs and mind. The flow is amazing; the twists and turns eliminate any steep accents and will keep your momentum moving forward. The first quarter of a mile works you little harder than the other parts of the trail, but the reward is grand. A fast and winding downhill takes you quickly to the bottom of the ski hill then pulls you over into the pines and other lush wooded areas with pine needles lining most of the trail beds. The northern portion of the system is peppered with pines. Trails in some areas get hard to see because of the open clear rows of the trees and the abundance of needles. There are trails that lead into disk golf holes that make the ride confusing as well. Don't worry, you won't get lost, they're easy to pick up again.

About a 1.5 miles into the ride, you enter a portion of the woods that seems to be out of fairy tale. Dark and dreary, but cool virgin forests surround a stretch of a 1/4 mile of singletrack. Wooden bridges sit gingerly over the remains of a creek bed. They're ridable, but tread lightly, they've been around for while and are slightly rickety. Beyond middle-earth is the small, the only rock garden. Not much, but is still a challenge. Further, you'll find it's all downhill from there. Twists and tight turns through trees and rocks, lead you down to the parking lot and maybe a beer.

Overall, Winter Park is an amazing, but short ride. If you're in the area, it might be worth the detour to explore and ride a couple of times. A word of warning. There is a portion of the trail that is closed down. This is on the State Fishery area and is not part of the trail system any longer. Fines will be enforced. The trail may be open to riders again at some point. We'll keep you posted.
