The Year in Racing

written by Joel Hynes

After spending a majority of the winter training on the road bike trainer in the basement it was good to get out and start riding on the road and dirt this spring. In the back of my mind I intended on training to compete for the Wisconsin Off-Road Series (WORS) in the Comp class. It took me a while to totally get my focus as I didn’t know what bike I was going to ride.

I knew my Kelly Deluxe was a trusty stead (and was race worthy) but also knew I was wanted a full suspension X-Country race bike. After spending weeks researching the desired brands and models I came up with three: the Titus Racer X, the Intense Spider FRO, and the Pivot Mach 4. I finally decided on the Intense Spider FRO for its quality virtual pivot design, weight, styling, and overall appeal. My next step involved gathering new and used parts from a variety of sources, including: Rbikes.com – frame, rohloff chain guide, and handle bar. Speedgearbike – Stan’s ZTR Race wheelset, SRam XO rear derailleur, seat post, Ritchey WCS stem, Ti water cage, Selle Italia SLR saddle. Rib Mt. Cycles – Race Face Dues crankset. Ebay – 2007 Sid World Cup. Finally, I had remnants of the Kona from last year including: XTR 11-34 cassette, Magura Marta SL’s, 4Ti Eggbeaters.

Now that I had all the parts defined it was time to do the build. I looked to WayneO at Speedgearbike for assistance with material and overall know-how for creating the Intense FRO for the 2008 race season. After working with Wayne on previous builds in the past, he suggested that I do the build and only ask for advice or input if necessary. In my humble opinion, I felt I did a great job, only needing assistance running cables and cutting the SID steer tube. The completed bike ended of being 20lbs 12oz including pedals (figure 2). Knowing that I had a bike suited for the task, it helped build my motivation for attempting to win the WORS Comp 30-34 overall.

This being my first attempt at racing a series I came in a little inexperienced. For starters, I wasn’t sure how to obtain sponsorships; I wasn’t sure on how many races I needed to attend, etc. The second step for competing in the series was finding a sponsor. I went to the only source I could think of, the WORS website. I asked on the forums if any teams were looking for additional riders. Turns out, I found a good starting point with Stadium Bike out of Green Bay. Although the distance is somewhat of an issue, I still feel connected after meeting some of the team at the Wausau race at Nine Mile. Their perks include cool jerseys and discounts on certain brands of bikes and parts. In the same vein, I mentioned in passing to a long time friend and fellow rider that I struggled with having to pay the entry fees and fuel especially with the rising gas prices. Wouldn’t you know, this long time friend and fellow rider also ran a web-site focusing on the mountain bike trail systems throughout the state of Wisconsin. After further discussion, Gary (FatTireGuides.com) suggested I ride for him as well. The thought was very intriguing and I took him up on it. I now ride for Stadium Bike / Fat Tire Guides. Thanks to Gary from Fat Tire Guides and Randy from Stadium Bike!

I have to give special thanks to my family for their support in the amount of training and effort put forth in goal and passion of mine. My wife Beth has been a tremendous help watching our two children (Logan 9 and Gavin 2) and putting up with me being gone for a good part of every other weekend. Oh and by the way, we are expecting our third in November. Beth and I laugh that we planned it around the bike season.

Family:

Beth, Logan: Age 9, Gavin: Age 2
